Newport Rises to Action – Statement from new squatted Social Centre https://cardiff.squat.net/newport-rises-to-action-statement-from-new-squatted-social-centre/ Mon, 22 Sep 2014 09:50:12 +0000 http://cardiff.squat.net/?p=283 89.2Inspired by the recent Week of Action against the NATO Summit in Newport, a group of local activists took control of an abandoned office block on Lower Dock Street, secured the building and now announce their intention to launch a new social centre and creative space for the Newport community.

The Newport Action Centre will host a weekly free vegan café, info-talks, various workshops, skill-shares, an art space and regular events to raise money for local causes, as well as being a home for some of us to run the space from.

We chose to do all this in a building that has a long history of providing a focal point for local communities and will use consensus and solidarity to prolong that role.

The building – which is directly opposite the passport office – had stood empty for around six months, gathering dust like so many other buildings in Newport while the cost of living continues to rise and forces more and more people towards poverty.

89

We chose to reclaim it for community use at a time when 9,500 police had besieged Newport, turning parts of South Wales into open-air prisons and openly flaunting their publicly-funded killing-machines on our streets. We went under the nose of the local police – whose headquarters stands just some meters away – entering the building without causing any damage or disruption and with the intention of liberating a space in increasingly oppressive, suffocating  surroundings.

During the week of the NATO Summit we all got a taste of the power the state has over our lives. They used our money to control our movements with barriers and road closures, filled the skies with helicopters to watch us, and harassed and intimidated those who chose to resist the circus of warmongering that was the summit.
It is likely that many of the surveillance measures known to have been taught to Gwent Police – and that we’ve seen imposed upon us – will remain in place long after the Summit is gone, with a recent report from the ‘Newport Business Development Taskforce’ recommending that Newport be turned into a ‘living lab’ for such technologies. The report was written by Simon Gibson, an associate of Terry Matthews, businessmen who have made huge fortunes working closely with arms companies.  The recommended strategy will personally benefit both of them enormously. Despite being a city known for the arts, the old Arts College is now a block of luxury flats – part of a process which is forcing house prices up in Newport – and recently many of the arts courses at the local university have been axed, with talk of specialising in software courses instead. The University building at Caerleon is now also about to be sold, with Terry Matthews probably the first in line to use it to get his hands into more arms and surveillance companies.

We intend to create an alternative  to these surroundings – a space where people can gather to discuss ideas without fear of being tracked and monitored, be creative without being constrained by social norms, learn outside of a narrowing education system, which fosters competition, and live without being restricted by unnecessary barriers and borders.

We have already had our first event, where we discussed the impact of the Scottish referendum result, and we plan to open on Sunday September 28th for our first weekly café day.

We hope you can join us, we invite people to help make this space live up to its potential and be a resource for the community to share in the struggle for justice.

Newport Action Centre crew.

The Red and Black Umbrella Collective invite you to their festive Two Year Anniversary https://cardiff.squat.net/the-red-and-black-umbrella-collective-invite-you-to-their-festive-two-year-anniversary/ Mon, 21 Oct 2013 12:29:33 +0000 http://cardiff.squat.net/?p=267 rbu

If you’re organised enough to carry ’round a diary (I am definitely not) penciling in the
1st AND 2nd of November is highly advisable as it will see our first festival!

two day event ending on the 2nd November to celebrate 2 YEARS of the occupied building in Cardiff. Easy enough to remember, right?

Beginning as a vague plan to host an Anarcho-Folk festival in Cardiff; the event has now evolved into a two day celebration of the ‘Brolly.
The space it has provided us has been invaluable to many, so we invite anyone and everybody who has shared the space with us to come, in particular any guests we have had to stay, musicians who’ve played and individuals who’ve led any lessons or workshops. Please come and celebrate with us!
This is an open event and will be donation upon entry to pay the acts who are travelling. Any excess money donated to us will go towards Cardiff squat funds and to Freedom Press Bookshop (who are still raising money to repair their shop and replace up to 700 books lost after fascists petrol-bombed their shop earlier this year).
Nobody will be refused entry if they cannot pay.

We will be releasing more information over the next two weeks to keep you all in suspense, just know that you will need your best dancing boots and both headliners will be supported by amazing local acts and musicians.

If you would like to play at the festival, run a stall or workshop on either of the days get in touch.
Also, any help with cooking or supplying skipped/vegan food for the festival would be much appreciated as we will have many mouths to feed!

Doors TBA
Drink tolerated after 7pm, Drunkenness not.
No drugs, no thugs!

Amsterdam: Cardiff Squatters Network Infonight @ Joe’s Garage https://cardiff.squat.net/amsterdam-cardiff-squatters-network-infonight/ Sat, 14 Sep 2013 16:59:21 +0000 http://cardiff.squat.net/?p=263 Cardiff Canton Police Station squatted

From Joe’s Garage:

Thursday September 19th 2013, Cardiff Squatters Network Infonight & People’s Kitchen, 7pm @ Joe’s Garage, Pretoriusstraat 43, 1092 EZ, Amsterdam

Squatters from Cardiff, Wales http://cardiff.squat.net/ are dropping by for an infonight about squatting in Cardiff over the last few years. Last month, Canton police station was squatted by the Antagonistic Collective Against Boredom (ACAB) and evicted a few weeks later, costing the police thousands of pounds through the courts and use of high court bailiffs.

They’ll also tell us about the recent ABC-based squat opposite the prison that successfully resisted eviction, Ty-Pwll Coch, the Municipal Club, as well as squats from 2011 and 2012; Gremlin Alley Social CentreRed & Black Umbrella and the Tax Invasion occupation.

They will also give updates on squatting in London; Made Possible By Squatting project, 195 Mare Street, County Street, London Queer Social Centre, Self-Organised London, Library Street Social Centre, and the Glasshouse, as well as ongoing repression against squatting in Bristol.

Volkseten Vegazulu is a people’s kitchen, every Monday during July and August, at 7pm, vegan food for 4€ or donation. All benefits go for social & political struggles. No reservation.

We’re always looking for cooks. Any help is welcome in the kitchen. Experience not required. Enjoying it is a must. If you want to know which days are still available in the schedule, send an email to joe[at]squat.net and book yourself the night. You can, of course, also participate by rolling up your sleeves and doing the dishes.

…but we’re happy instead to show the film 14 Kilómetros, by Gerardo Olivares, about the situation there. One of the activists plans to come to Cardiff to share some of the info-talk prepared, and the music that’s been written there, another time soon.

The location has also changed…

New details:

Tonight (17th July) at Cardiff’s newest squat – on Moira Terrace, opposite the prison.
There will be a film screening of Gerardo Olivares’ movie “14 Kilometros”

From Red & Black Umbrella:

On saturday the 13th of july, cardiff abc has organised a one day anti-prison event at the red and black umbrella. The event aims at creating a wider awareness and critique of the ever expanding prison society and people’s struggles against it.

The event will run from 1-11 and is split into two distinct parts.

From 1-6 there will be space for meetings, discussions, talks, workshops and skillshares, for the most part the discussions will be relatively informal and structureless so as to not stifle creativity and originality. We are asking attendees to not bring alcohol to this portion of the event
to discourage all day drinking and encourage clear, sober and respectful interaction.

From 6-11(ish) there will be a variety of music and poetry being
performed. There is a suggested donation of £5 for this portion of the
event with any excess after costs going to cardiff abc to distribute to
various prisoners/defendants that we are in contact with (for more info on
this just ask.)

There will be hot vegan food available from the beginning of the event, as
well as a variety of relevant zines; all for donation.

Hope to see you there.

People’s Kitchen returns to Red & Black https://cardiff.squat.net/peoples-kitchen-returns-to-red-black/ Fri, 17 May 2013 15:18:12 +0000 http://cardiff.squat.net/?p=173 This Tuesday 21st May from 6:30pm, the social centre will be open for the return of People’s Kitchen.

rbu return pk may 21st

Everyone is welcome come and to share a hot vegan meal with us, served free from around 7pm.

Donations welcomed to cover costs. (gas, dry food etc.)

We will also open the free shop,  the library, info shop and bike workshop space and there will be an open mic afterwards for anyone who wants to bring an instrument etc!

This Tuesday we will also be discussing the setting up of a new local Catering Collective, and we’re looking for people to get involved!

Under capitalism food is distributed according to privilege and sold for ever increasing prices. Those with enough privilege to access it have what they desire, whilst even in supposedly wealthy places many people suffer hunger and malnutrition. Our starting point is that food should be communal. We want to promote this in our work by catering for events, meetings, actions, demos etc. around the causes that we believe in. There is a plan to head to Calais, France, for a week in July already, but nothing is fixed just yet.

If you haven’t been to the RBU yet this year, this would be a great night to come. We hope to see you there next week! Squeebz and co x
